לפני מספר שבועות פנה אליי סגן יו"ר האגודה למלחמה בסרטן, מר ליאון רקנאטי לעמוד בראש מבצע "הקש בדלת" של האגודה למלחמה בסרטן לשנה הקרובה. ללא היסוס נעניתי מיד לבקשתו מתוך הבנה עמוקה לצורך המתמיד בהדברת מחלה נוראה זו.
המחקר הרפואי המתקדם אינו חדל ולו ליום, לשעה, לדקה להילחם באופייה המורכב והמתעתע של המחלה. המחקר של השנים האחרונות הביא לכך שחייהם של ילדים ומבוגרים כאחד ניצלו, או לפחות הוארכו במידה רבה.
אלמלא התוצאות האפקטיביות שהושגו על ידי צותי מחקר רבים מרחבי העולם, לא הייתי זוכה להיות כאן היום.
לפני 15 שנה אובחנה אצלי מחלת הסרטן לראשונה, כאשר תוחלת החיים הצפויה שלי היתה 4 שנים לכל היותר. לא זו בלבד שאני עדיין כאן היום, אלא גם שמאז אובחנו אצלי שני סוגי סרטן נוספים שאינם קשורים, שגם הם נמצאים ברמיסיה. אז כן, השקעה במחקרים בתחום הסרטן ובמניעתו אכן מניבה תוצאות המשנות את החיים, וזוהי הסיבה העיקרית לכך שנרתמתי ברצון למשימה זו.
למרבה הצער, ישנם עדיין חולים רבים המבקשים מזור מהרפואה מודרנית. למעלה מ - 1400 ילדים חולי סרטן חיים היום בישראל ו-400 ילדים ובני נוער נוספים מאובחנים מידי שנה. גם אם חמישה מכל שישה ילדים יחלימו, אין בכך די עבור הילד השישי, זה שלא ישרוד את המחלה.
מזה עשור מפעילה קרן רש"י מחנה קיץ מיוחד לילדים חולי סרטן בכפר הנוער בניצנה בשיתוף המרכז הרפואי בסורוקה. זוהי אומנם תרומה צנועה ביחס לצרכים האדירים של המלחמה במחלה ארורה זו, ולשם כך נרתמתי אישית לעמוד בראש מבצע הקש בדלת לשנה זו.
כפי שנאמר לא אחת, הצורך לנצח את האויב הקטלני מספר אחת בעולם, דורש משאבים עצומים. אנו חווים מדי יום את המשפחות המלוות את יקיריהן במלחמתם האינסופית במחלה. רבים מהם אינם מסוגלים להתמודד לבדם אל מול ההשקעה הענקית - פיזית ונפשית - הנדרשת מהם.
המחקר הרפואי אף הוא, אינו מסוגל להתקדם ללא תוספת קבועה של משאבים אשר יאפשרו לו להמשיך לשקוד על פיתוח ומציאת דרכים חדשות להתגבר על ביטויי המחלה על סוגיה וגווניה.
קרן רש"י בראשותי מעניקה היום מיליון שקל לפתיחת מבצע "הקש בדלת" לשנת 2011/12.
תרומה זו תופנה לטובת פעילות נרחבת בנושא אורח חיים בריא ומניעת סרטן בקרב בני נוער ברחבי הארץ. אנו מאמינים כי חינוך לאורח חיים בריא והגברת המודעות לנושא, בקרב דור העתיד של ישראל, יסייעו במיגורה ובעצירת התפשטותה של מחלת הסרטן.
במסגרת זו, ייערכו פעילויות הסברה ובכלל זה ניידת הסברה של האגודה למלחמה בסרטן וקרן רש"י אשר תגיע לבתי ספר ברחבי הארץ, בדגש על בתי ספר בפריפריה הגיאוגרפית והחברתית של ישראל.
לאור שאיפתנו המתמדת להפיק את מירב התועלת מכל שקל שאנו משקיעים, אנו רואים בפעילות זו את השימוש היעיל ביותר בכספי הקרן.
אני קורא מפה לכל עמיתיי בקרנות הפילנתרופיות ולכל שותפינו בתעשייה ובעסקים, לעשות מאמץ מיוחד למען שיפור איכות החיים של החולים ובני משפחותיהם, ויחד עם זאת לאפשר לאגודה להמשיך בטיפוח המחקר הרפואי וברכישת מכשירים מצילי חיים למוסדות הרפואה השונים בארץ.

הוברט לאוואן מכהן כנשיא קרן רש"י מאז הקמתה בשנת 1984. מר לאוואן הוא בן למשפחה בעלת מסורת ארוכה של פעילות קהילתית ופילנתרופית. אבי סבו, נרסיס לאוואן, היה ממקימי תנועת כל ישראל חברים (כי"ח - אליאנס), אשר שמה לה למטרה להגן על זכויותיהם של אנשים - יהודים ולא יהודים כאחד - הסובלים מאפליה על רקע השתייכותם הדתית, ואשר הקימה רשת מקיפה של בתי ספר עבור יהודים החיים בארצות מוסלמיות. בין בתי ספר אלו ניתן למנות את בית הספר החקלאי הראשון שהוקם בישראל- מקווה ישראל. מר לאוואן ממשיך מסורת זו באמצעות מספר תפקידים ציבוריים, בהם היותו מנכ"ל כי"ח בישראל וסגן נשיא וגזבר של אליאנס בפאריס.
תחת הנהגתו של מר לאוואן, משקיעה קרן רש"י מאמצים גדולים להגשמת חזון מייסדה, גוסטאב לאוואן ז"ל, לפעול לצמצום הפערים החברתיים בישראל, להעצמת האוכלוסיות המוחלשות ולחיזוק החברה הישראלית. בהובלתו של מר לאוואן פיתחה קרן רש"י את המושג "פילנתרופיה יזמית" לפיו הקרן פועלת לאיתור צרכים בתחומי החינוך, החברה, הבריאות והשירותים הקהילתיים בפריפריה הגיאוגרפית והחברתית של ישראל, יוזמת, מעורבת ומובילה מאות פרויקטים ותוכניות ברחבי הארץ, תוך שיתוף פעולה ורתימתם של משרדי ממשלה, פדרציות יהודיות, קרנות ותורמים פרטיים.
למר לאוואן הוענקו תארי דוקטור לשם כבוד מטעם אוניברסיטת בן גוריון בנגב והטכניון.

A few weeks ago I was approached by the vice chairman of the Israel Cancer Association, Mr. Leon Recanati, who asked me to chair this year's "Hakesh Badelet" (Door Knock) fundraising campaign of the Association. I accepted without hesitation, in deep awareness of the vital need to fight continuously this terrible illness.
Advanced medical research is struggling constantly with the complex and tricky nature of cancer. Recent research has saved the lives of many children and adults, or at lease extended them significantly.
Were it not for the effective results obtained by so many research teams throughout the world, I would not have the privilege of being here today.
15 years ago I was diagnosed with my first cancer and given a maximum life expectancy of four years. Not only am I still here today but I have since had two other and non related cancers for which I am also on remission. So yes, investing in cancer research and prevention does produce life changing results and this is essentially why I so readily accepted this mission.
Sadly, however, there are still many patients seeking the help of modern medicine. More than 1,400 children in Israel are cancer patients, and 400 more children and youth are diagnosed every year. And the fact that five of every six child with cancer will recover is not a satisfactory argument for the sixth, the one who will not recover.
For the last ten years, the Rashi Foundation has offered a special summer camp at the Nitzana Youth Village for children coping with cancer, in partnership with the Soroka Medical Center. This is indeed a modest contribution compared with the enormous needs; which is why I took it upon myself to head the fundraising campaign this year.
As you all know, beating the deadly enemy we call cancer requires huge resources. The patients and their families often find it impossible to cope on their own with the massive physical and mental investment it takes.
Medical research too cannot proceed without a steady influx of resources that will allow it to continue seeking and developing new ways to overcome the different facets and types of cancer.
The Rashi Foundation is giving a grant of one million shekels as the opening of this year's "Hakesh Badelet" campaign.
This grant will be designated for wide-scale activity among youth, aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent cancer. We believe that education towards a healthy way of life and increased awareness among the young generation can help to defeat the illness and stop it from spreading.
As part of this effort, a mobile education unit sponsored by Rashi and the Israel Cancer Association will visit schools throughout the country, with special emphasis on schools in the geographic and social periphery of Israel.
In our constant strive for every Shekel to go as far as it can, we consider this to be the most efficient use of the Foundation's funds.
I call my fellow philanthropists and our partners in industry and business to do a very special effort in order to improve the quality of life of patients and their families, as well as to enable the Association to continue supporting medical research and purchasing life-saving equipment for Israeli medical institutes.

Hubert Leven has served as the President of the Rashi Foundation since its establishment in 1984. Mr. Leven comes from a family with a long tradition of community service and philanthropy. His great-grandfather, Narcisse Leven, was among the founders of Kol Israel Haverim (KIAH-Alliance), an organization whose goal was to protect the rights and liberties of Jews and non-Jews who were being discriminated against because of their religious affiliation; and which created a huge network of schools for Jews living in the Muslim countries around the Mediterranean. Among those was the first agricultural school in Palestine: Mikve Israel.
Mr. Leven continues this family tradition by serving in several public positions, includingExecutive Vice-President of KIAH (Israel) and as Vice-President of Alliance Israelite Universelle (France).
Under Mr. Leven's leadership, the Rashi Foundation is investing intensive efforts to realize the vision of its founder, Gustave Leven z"l, working to close social gaps in Israel, to empower disadvantaged populations and to strengthen Israeli society.
Led by Mr. Leven, the Foundation has developed towards venture philanthropy - identifying needs in the fields of education, welfare, health and community services in the geographic and social periphery, initiating and managing hundreds of projects and programs throughout the country, while recruiting and cooperating with government ministries, other foundations, Jewish Federations and private donors.
